The national retailer will start a small format store within the District’s Northeast zone in the year 2020, which makes it Target’s 3rd in the city. This will follow a Cleveland Park location scheduled be to open in the spring of 2019, the company will announce this on Monday.
The Ivy City store at the location of New York Avenue along with 16th Street NE will cover about 67,000 sqft, in a lease with Douglas Development Corp. Its offerings will consist of all the likings of a typical Target store; needless to say the locals are pleased about this one!
The Cleveland Park store will likely be smaller, at 24,700 sqft and sited in the Sam’s Park and Shop strip mall at 3505 Connecticut Ave. NW, as reported by WBJ’s Rebecca Cooper in November. The space will have similar offerings, with a CVS and no Starbucks.
The Ivy City and Cleveland Park locations will each employ between fifty and one hundred staff members, bringing yet another huge opportunity for job seekers to get to work.
These two stores will join just one other Target in D.C., a two-story building, just about 170,000 sqft store that is close to the DC USA shopping center in Columbia Heights. A typical residential district Target averages around 135,000 sqft.
“We have formed a great cooperation with Target, which is important to the renewal of Hecht District”, says Douglas Jemal, the founder and president of Douglas Development, mentioned in a statement. “The New York Ave. location was once in the past used as a warehouse and we believe Target’s new tiny format store will be a great addition to the region”.
Target has been presenting these flexible format stores in the district in the last few years, with the very first at 14,000 sqft in College Park in 2015, accompanied by a 20,000 sqft space in Rosslyn that same year as well as a 3rd in Bethesda in 2017. Others are planned for Ballston along with Falls Church. The retailer is on track to open 130 of these tiny format stores nationally before the end of the year 2019.
Great news for all the Target lovers here in the area!
